INSTALLATION Instructions - HAH & WAH - Axle Housings

You have purchased the finest bearing carrier in the industry. To get full utility from your new Axle Housing please read the following:

This carrier is equipped with Timken tapered roller bearings. These bearings, while stronger than ball bearings, require additional care in the set-up stage.

1> Your carrier is ready to use right out of the box. The bearings are not sealed and will require periodic maintenance. At that time, the bearings will need to be packed with a high quality, water resistant wheel bearing grease. New housing seals may be required at this time as well (available from Durablue or a Durablue distributor). The packing must be done by hand (a zerk fitting is not provided due to the need for hand packing). Extra grease in the housing cavity is discouraged because it leads to heat build-up, which can affect bearing life.

2> Due to the larger diameter Timken bearings in the HAH, a small amount of chain adjustability has been lost. This seldom creates problems but can make chain adjustment more tedious. If you need full adjustability, use HAH-B axle carrier. This carrier has double row ball bearings and full adjustability.

3> When installing the axle in the carrier, you will need to adjust the bearing end play much like the front wheel bearings on cars. Tighten the axle until all play is removed. Back the nut off (loosen the nut) about 5-10 degrees so that the axle turns freely without any extra endplay. If you have a dial indicator, the endplay should be .015”. Ride the bike to "set" all components. Then reset the nut again. If you over tighten the axle, the bearings will fail.
